A kiss for a pack llama

Llama Trek the Pecos!!

To a hiker, llamas are the perfect pack animals - quiet, curious, and ecologically sound. Llamas have been used as a beast of burden for over 5000 years and to hike with these majestic animals is an experience not to be missed. They allow the experienced backpacker or the novice camper to explore the backcountry as never before. Shining Star Ranch invites you to explore the breathtaking vistas and the quiet serenity of the Pecos Wilderness in the Santa Fe National Forest while leading an experienced, trail trained llama carrying all the camping gear.

The Pecos Wilderness is approximately 225,000 acres of high Alpine forest noted for its spectacular scenery. It is roughly bounded by Santa Fe on the west, Taos on the north, and Las Vegas on the east. Elevations range from around 8,000 feet to just over 13,000 feet at the summit of the second highest peak in New Mexico. The fifteen secluded backcountry fishing lakes and eight major streams are home to rainbow, brown and the native cutthroat trout. Although sightings of elk or black bear are rare, bighorn sheep are common on many trails or often find their way into camp around dusk. Summer daytime temperatures rarely peak above 80 degrees and evening temperatures in the 40's make sitting around a cozy campfire or snuggling into a warm sleeping bag just part of your memorable experience.

Shining Star Ranch offers llama treks into the Pecos Wilderness from early May through late September. Our standard trek includes five days in the wilderness plus accomodations at the Plaza Hotel in downtown Las Vegas the night before departure and the night after coming out, i.e., generally Sunday and Friday nights. All equipment is included. In addition to conventional gear you might expect, like sleeping bags and tents, the llamas allow us to take in tables, chairs, ice chests, and other amenities a backpacker can only dream about taking along. All food is provided on the trail. Menu options are too numerous to mention here but we can assure you, you won't be dissapointed. All fresh ingredients, a touch of northern New Mexico cuisine, spectacular desserts, and marvelous surroundings gives the term 'Dining Out' a whole new meaning. The cost for a standard trek is $660 per person.

In addition to the standard trek described above, we also offer custom trips for groups of four or more. Generally, this is a trek of shorter duration for families or groups of friends that want to make a llama trek part of their vacation in the beautiful southwest. All food and equipment is provided and the routing or destination is selected to accomodate the trip schedule, i.e., often two or three nights on the trail. The cost for a custom trip is $140 per person per night on the trail. Llama leasing is also available for the experienced camper who has all their own equipment and desires a more private and secluded vacation.

Shining Star Ranch has permits and is insured according to the requirements of the United States Forest Service to operate in the Pecos Wilderness. It is located just north of the historic, old west town of Las Vegas, New Mexico which is approximately 60 miles east of Santa Fe and around 120 miles north of the Albuquerque International Airport. Make this an adventure of a lifetime by experiencing the uniqueness and beauty of the southwest by spending a few extra days in Santa Fe, Taos, or Albuquerque. Santa Fe is one of the most popular tourist sites in the entire world. Don't miss it before or after your llama trek in the beautiful Pecos Wilderness.
