Rafter D Llamas |
Dick and Carolyn Denning's Rafter D Llamas has been raising llamas since 1987. We are located on 10 acres in the Carson Valley approximately 50 miles south of Reno, Nevada. The llama facilities surround the house (llama views out of every window). The barn is a very large ""shed"" 100' x 80' divided down the length - one side for the boys, one for the girls. Because of the design, they can rarely see each other, which causes less friction among the males, who all live peacefully together. All visiting females are treated as our own, given loving care, good feed, minerals, and treats. Fresh water is always available from our Nelson automatic waterers and all ""llama beans"" are picked up daily.
Our herd consists of 20 breeding females, 5 studs, several working geldings, and 10 - 20 juveniles and yearlings. Our females are large, well-conformed, medium to heavy wool, and good milkers. Their bloodlines are both North American and a mixture of North and South American which, in our experience, makes good strong outcross crias. Our studs (see pictures) are what we call NASA's, meaning mixes of both North American and South American bloodlines. We breed for conformation, personality, good wool quality and size (basically in that order). Our crias are show/breeding quality with willing personalities. We usually have about 10 crias and/or weanlings to choose from.
